Emojis gain sounds to be identified by visually impaired people.

Emoticons are the new world language. But for the visually impaired, they are nothing but a cold and emotionless narration. Live TIM, TIM’s the fixed ultra-broadband, in collaboration with the Benjamin Constant Institute, changed this story, developing a new digital accessibility tool that includes all visually impaired individuals in this conversation: an update for one of the most commonly used screen readers in the world, NVDA. We identified the most popular Emoticons from social networks and recorded sounds to represent each one of them. Now, instead of the cold narration, the visually impaired people will be able to hear real emotions.

More about the Benjamin Constant Institute

Benjamin Constant Institute.

IBC is one of the most respected institutes in the world in terms of accessibility. For over 160 years, it has worked and developed projects whose goal is inclusion. To develop EmotiSounds, we had the support of a group of 8 professionals, including teachers, visually impaired people, information architects and doctors. They identified the most used Emoticons, how they would sound like and their usability.
